What is a “société à mission”?
A “société à mission”, as defined by the French PACTE law enacted in May 2019, is a business model that seeks to harness the transformative power of companies to solve the social and environmental challenges of the 21st century, by linking innovation capacity and solidarity with stakeholders. It enables companies to define their own raison d’être and to combine that with objectives that contribute to the social and environmental issues they wish to address within the scope of their activity. As the mission is set out in the articles of corporation, it ensures management, employees ans shareholders are in line with the integration of social and environmental objectives into the core of the business model. The mission consists of a raison d’être (defining its identity, its usefulness to society, and the future the company wishes to help build), associated social and environmental objectives, and a governance system that protects the mission.
